Billionaire space entrepreneur wants vegetarian-only colony on Mars

A US billionaire and co-founder of PayPal, Elon Musk, has made plans to build a settlement for 80,000 people on Mars when technology makes it possible for man to live there – as long as the inhabitants are vegetarians. Musk is a considered one of America’s most respected private space entrepreneurs and was in charge of creating SpaceX, a space transport company that produced the Falcon 9 rocket that delivers NASA cargo to the International Space Station. Musk, who is worth about $2 billion, revealed his tactics in a speech at the Royal Aeronautical Society. He was in attendance in…

Milky Way, Andromeda galaxies set to collide in giant game of space bumper cars

A short time ago, in a galaxy very, very close by, a NASA satellite thought it detected a gamma ray burst in Andromeda. It was a false alarm, but astronomers used the opportunity as a reminder that our galaxy and Andromeda are set for a head-on collision. NASA’s Swift satellite discovers and measures gamma-ray bursts, the most powerful explosions in the universe, and their afterglow in X-ray, optical, and ultraviolet wavelengths of light. The space agency says the spacecraft is designed “with powerful telescopes and quick reflexes to capture gamma-ray bursts as they flash and leave a lingering afterglow.” On Wednesday, astronomers…

Top US Astronomers: Alien life to be discovered within 20 years

Two of the United States’ top astronomers appeared before Congress this week, telling lawmakers that the chance of discovering life on other planets is nearly inevitable, and that it may happen within two decades. According to ABC News, Dan Werthimer of the SETI Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley, called for more funding to be allocated to the search for extraterrestrial life, since he is “close to 100 percent” certain that primitive, microbial life exists elsewhere in the galaxy.

‘Sibling’ sun found 110 light yrs from Earth

The sun could have a sibling according to researchers at the University of Texas, who believe the star was born from the same cloud of gas as our sun. It is hoped this could give astronomers fresh insights into how life on earth started. The study was conducted by astronomer Ivan Ramirez, based at the University of Texas, who says that the star is 110 light years away from Earth. “We want to know where we were born,” Ramirez said in a statement announcing his discovery. “If we can figure out in what part of the galaxy the sun formed, we can constrain…

Scientists find way to turn light into matter

Researchers in London have found a way to make matter from light, using high powered lasers. The idea behind the theory was first thought up 80 years ago by two physicists, who were to work later on creating the world’s first atomic bomb. In 1934, US physicists Gregory Breit and John Wheeler worked out that, on very rare occasions, two particles of light (photons) could combine to produce an electron and a positron. They were never able to carry out their theory in practice as they believed it would be almost impossible. However, Steve Rose, who is professor of physics…

Smartphone with Geolocation GPS/IP‏

Years ago, the smartphone “boom” was still an uncertain possibility. Today, we are surrounded by a society of smart phone addicts who live as if their lives cannot continue without instant, mobile access to the web, e-mail, and apps for every occasion. Mobile devices have come a long way in just short years, and now support a wide range of useful features beyond making phone calls. For location-challenged individuals, geolocation is one of the most useful additions. Many iPhone and Android devices have been fitted with GPS hardware that can produce reliable geographical data, and in this article we will…

ThinkTech: What is the nature of light?

Turn off all mobile phones and electronic devices during takeoff or landing of a plane. Even no one is using his mobile phone during the flight? Why do computer speakers buzz when a cellphone is about to ring? Temporarily lost home WiFi signal every time you turn on the microwave. All about an increasing of interference effects due to specific nature of electromagnetic radiation. So what is the electromagnetic nature of light?
